MARCH 13: PERUVIAN BLUE OPAL
Monthly Meeting
Chevy Chase Community Center 7:30 pm
Dealer/collector Lee Horowitz has mined and sold Peruvian blue opal in all its forms -- rough for cutting, finished strands of beads, as well as freeform and calibrated gem quality stones for setting. He will enlighten us on current treatments of the stone, particularly finished product coming from India and China. Learn to distinguish the 'real deal' from the various colour-treated stones. A wonderful assortment of Lee's beautiful blue opals -- rough, beads, cut and polished stones, is currently featured in the Museum's "Treasures of the Earth" exhibit.
APRIL 10: ROUGH TO READY—TRICKY AND TRUE
Monthly Meeting
Chevy Chase Community Center 7:30 pm
Many of you will recognize BSGW members 'Murph' Moorefield and Barbara Warnock of Caldron Crafts, in Baltimore, as long-time vendors in our Bead Bazaar, or perhaps from the classes they teach BeadFest. Using examples from their collection, they will demonstrate ways of detecting imitations of stone beads. This hands-on presentation will include samples of the rough material from which many of our favorite stone beads are made.
