Nine decades of collections and recollections yield the imaginative
and inspirational works of Kathleen Williams on display at the Bead Museum
in Washington DC from October 4-20.

The assemblages combine fiber, knotting, beads and found objects.
Designed to ornament the body, many of the pieces evolve into sculptures,
framed miniature tapestries, or wall art.

The artist's inspiration begins with her earliest memories of childhood in
thesouth of England. "Recollections of the dark images of fairy tales, bold
adventures of gods and goddesses, mysteries of castle ruins and
centuries-old English country houses." Supplemented and stimulated
by a lifetime of collecting objects of beauty and interest-in such diverse
settings as country walks, beaches, bead bazaars, and flea markets-
the artist's process brings together training, discipline and creative expression.

Time is an important theme in this extraordinary exhibition. Kathleen Williams began her training at the London School of Arts and Craftsin the early 1930s, and was exposed to works as varied as the Impressionists and the Arts and Crafts movement.

Continuing her study in the US, she earned an M.A. in sculpture, then immersed herself in ceramic techniques. For 12 years Ms. Williams taught art full-time in DC elementary schools, and found the fantasy worlds of her students to be an enriching experience. Summers offered the opportunity to explore materials and disciplines of other cultures: knotting and fiber techniques, silver jewelry, stitchery, beads, and body adornment. She understands that time is a precious commodity for the serious artist and often devotes months to each creation.
